Andy McAlpine Memorial Cup
Friday 2 April, 2010
The Walcountian Blues Lacrosse Club, of the UK Lacrosse Southern Premier League were on tour this Bank Holiday weekend, stopping to play 2 games at Norbury.
The 1st team, played in the Andy McAlpine Memorial Cup at midday and won their game with some good team lacrosse.
The 2nd team taking on the Blues Two's at 2pm was good to play in and to watch - with some aerial acrobatics from Blues who were trying to head the ball in with diving headers. The game finished a draw and was a good end to the Lacrosse - which was played in a competetive but friendly spirit.
Thanks to June and Sue for providing the catering - much appreciated by all the players / spectators.
The day then moved onto the Tunnes and agood evening was had by all.

Junior Flags Semi Victory!

Norbury 12 – 3 Timperley A
Norbury came back from 3-2 down at half-time, winning the 2nd half 10-0 to beat Timperley A 12-3 at Wacs on Sunday. Timperley took advantage of 2 man down situations to take a 2-0 lead before Norbury pulled one back at the end of the 1st Q. The 2nd Q took on a similar style with the teams drawing 1-1. The 2nd half was a different prospect all together with Ian Cordwell keeping a clean sheet; Norbury found their shooting boots and by the end of the 3rd Q the game was all but over. The lads held their nerve and continued to play with passion throughout the 4th Q.
Goal Scorers
4 – Craig Bennett
4 – Adam Wood
2 – Steve Pigeon
2 – Peter Clyne
From the ELA website;
“Norbury turned on the style to register a 12-3 victory over Timperley A in their semi-final clash on Sunday, while Sheffield beat Boardman and Eccles 9-4 to secure their place in this year's final, which will be played on Saturday 10th April”
Rust Removed!
Monday 25 January, 2010
In a low scoring game, Norbury's 1st team beat Cheadle 'A' 5-3 in the Junior Flags to book a place in this years semi finals. Their name will go in to the hat with Sheffield Uni, Boardman and one other, TBC.
Elsewhere this weekend the 2nds lost out to Mellor 'B', 8 to 3.
On Sunday the Under 19's mowed through a Boardman/Oldham 12 -4 in their pre-lim cup round! They'll now face a tough Heaton Mersey side in the quarter finals.
All in all it was good to be playing lacrosse after the big freeze!
Next weekend see's the 1st team at home to Heaton Mersey, the 2nd team away to Leeds and the Under 19's play, as mentioned above, Heaton Mersey. The 3rds should be back in action over the next fortnight also.
Norbury 6 - 5 Boardman & Eccle
Tuesday 29 September, 2009
Norbury 6 - 5 Boardman & Eccles
Q1: 2-1
Q2: 2-2
Q3: 1-0
Q4: 1-2
Low scoring thriller to start the season off under perfect conditions for lacrosse at Norbury.
Both defences played well in this evenly matched game, Boardman fought back to draw level in the 4th quarter dominating time of possession but Norbury scored the winner on a fastbreak with their only shot of the 4th quarter.
Norbury Goalie Ian Coldwell made some clutch saves especially on Man down in the last quarter to keep Norbury in the game.
Pete Green (LSM) did a great job for Norbury marking Boardman's England U19 player Max Leonard holding him to 2 points (1,1).
Greg Bennett top scored for Boardman & Eccles with 3 points (2,1) followed by John Grubisic 2 pts (1,1) & Chris Brown (1,0)
Craig Bennett (Wales) Top Scored for Norbury with 5 Goals (5,0), with Steve Pigeon (1,0) & Adam Woods (Wales) 4 pts (0,4)
Boardman out shot Norbury 36 - 24
Lots of handling errors as expected in first game of the season but the game was played in good spirits through out refereed by Tony Nugent & Rory ? (reffing his first ever game). It was a competitive game right to the end played at a fast pace and a good game to watch.
Great start to the season, if only all the games could be played in this weather.
Under 16s Tournament
Monday 13 July, 2009
U16s top table in 8 a side tournament
Norbury U16s finest took on the might of SMG, Cheadle Hulme, Wilmslow and Welwyn (aka the Southerners) on Sunday 12 July. Pre tournament preparations weren’t promising as most of the team were asleep on Saturday afternoon/early evening following their prom night.
A late cry off from Scott Dagga (had to wash his hair) didn’t faze the team in the slightest. A stop at Nick’s house on the way to Cheadle Hulme caused further potential problems. He had turned into Kevin the Teenager overnight and was refusing to play. However Simon was having none of it and made him play. Kevin then refused to play in goals so Liam S donned the pad for the first game, versus hosts Cheadle Hulme. A surprisingly good performance followed, I think we won 5-2. Sean can’t shoot round his back.
Second match versus Stockport Mersey Guild. Kevin went in nets (but forgot to put his pad on) and spent most of the half throwing aimless balls off the sidelines. Awful first half, most of it spent a man down thanks to a procession of send offs. The Norbury angels insisted to Coach Holland at half time that they were the innocent victims of terrible refereeing decisions. It didn’t quite look like that from the sidelines. Only 1 down despite all that, so we had escaped lightly. Early second half equaliser (Lewis Dagga, I think) set us up nicely for a push for victory. Not surprisingly, SMG were soon 3-1 up. Not looking good with about one minute to go, but two goals (from the Howard boys, Darren and Sean) turned it into a very useful draw. SMG completely gutted, massive psychological victory for Norbury.
Next up Wilmslow. We actually played really well again, and I think it was 5-2. Mojo scored a nice goal. Craig scored a beauty left handed. Lewis Dagga became our 3rd goalie of the day and played well. Mojo became our 4th goalie when he was hit by a shot going about 10 yards wide. Kevin scored and got an assist. Liam A’s blistering pace was too much for everyone, including himself. No-one can shoot properly while moving that fast. Martyn pretty much nailed anyone stupid enough to run anywhere near him. Unfortunately Norbury were one straight attacker down by this stage because Sean had to go home to say his prayers and spend some time in quiet contemplation.
Fourth match versus the Southerners. Energy levels dropped dramatically, and a complete nothing of a 1st half saw us 1-0 down. Oli quickly put his finger on the problem, as only straight defenders can; the attack was rubbish in his opinion. Second half was a bit better, although the disruption from Oli getting fouled by a 13 year old about half his size didn’t help. As Oli tried to explain to the kid how to foul properly, the ref made them shake hands. A bit harsh as you could see that the last thing the kid wanted to do was go anywhere near the maniac with the big stick. Lewis Dagga sportingly evened up the foul count and the match sort of re-started. We equalised (Liam S, who took a big hit on his shoulder for his troubles). A draw would have been a decent result but unfortunately the pressure of having his ex-girlfriend’s dad refereeing and giving him the evil eye got too much for Jed, who left the ball completely alone for a Welwyn attacker to get an easy winner. Special mention for Marcus trying to run straight through their giant defender. It was never going to happen, mate!
End of the round robin stage – Norbury top of the table.
Semi finals – the other 3 teams warmed up and got ready to play. We lay around and talked about the prom night, much to the amusement of the younger players.
We played SMG again. The earlier psychological victory proved to be an absolute waste of time as we got stuffed 6-2. To be fair, the team was completely exhausted by this stage. Highlight of the match was probably Jed’s take out on Elliot as they both went for the same ball. Also, Liam A’s goal. Particular mention to Craig, Marcus and Darren in this match who really tried to keep things going as the 16 year olds wilted. Also Mojo played some quality lacrosse, although nothing to match his “here’s your help, fat boy” to Oli in the warm ups which immediately endeared him to his older team mates.
All in all a very enjoyable day. Congratulations to the whole squad. My MVP would probably be Darren. I thought he was awesome for the whole tournament. Full squad; Nick Mitchell, Jed Darbyshire, Oli Coburn, Elliot Naylor, Lewis Dagnanleach, Liam Allen, Martyn Lee, Darren Howard, Marcus Ridings, Craig Ridings, Sean Howard, Liam Shier, and Joe Morgan.
